Alachua County Teacher Assistance Program

Purpose and Overview:

What is A-TIGER?

ACEA does not directly donate funds to political campaigns.  However, there are many political issues that impact public education.  It’s important for those ACEA members who want to participate in the political process to have an avenue for doing so. Therefore, a Political Action Committee was formed called Alachua Totally Involved in Government and Education Reform (A-Tiger).  Since no regular union dues are given to political campaigns, A-Tiger serves a vital service in promoting political candidates and issues that directly impact our public schools.

Article V, section 3. School Calendar

The Association and the Superintendent or his designee will develop a tentative school calendar(s) including those items commonly found in the districtwide twelve-month school calendar(s).  This calendar(s) will be submitted to the Board before March 1 for its consideration and will include an indication of the desires of teachers in relation to the calendar(s).  Calendars may be for more than one (1) year.

Wages and working conditions are all negotiated through a  collective bargaining process.  The School Board and ACEA each have representatives who come together throughout the year to collectively bargain the terms of the two different contracts.  There is a contract for all instructional staff and another contract for non-instructional staff, or ESPs.   As new language is agreed to by the collective bargaining teams,  it is submitted to the School Board members and to members of the bargaining unit for ratification.

Article XV. Professional Development (CREATE) Council

Section 1.  Membership

The Association will provide the Board with a list of teachers and career service personnel qualified to serve on the Professional Development (CREATE) Council, from which the Board will appoint teacher and career service council members.  The initial list will be given to the Board by the Association no later than July 20 of each year so appointments can be made by the Board on or before September 1.  If vacancies occur, the Association will submit name(s) to fill the vacancy (ies).

Article XVIII, section 3. Insurance Committee

There will be an insurance committee to evaluate available coverage and make recommendations to the Board, including any bid specifications which may be needed.  Upon requires of the Board, the committee may also serve in a liaison capacity with the insurance carrier(s) and the Insurance Risk Management Department on matters of concern to teachers and other staff.  The committee will be appointed annually and composed of three teachers; one Education Support Professional; and either one currently employed bargaining unit member

The Retired Alachua County Educators(TRACE)

 

The Retired Alachua County Educators (TRACE) provides opportunities for members to continue their membership and involvement in matters concerning education.  Membership is open to any retired education union member.  We maintain unifed membership with FEA-Retired, NEA-Retired and AFT-Retired.  Because of unified membership we can offer the following benefits:

  • least expensive medigap insurance

  • magazines from FEA, NEA, AFT and the Alliance for Retired Americans

  • political power through lobbying to protect Social Security

  • low interest credit cards

  • estate

There are several committees that the Senior ACEA Representative at each school is responsible for monitoring.  Each one of the committees involves an election at the school.

Building Concerns:

There are 3-5 ACEA members on this committee at each school and the details can be found in the contract (Article V, sec 6).  ACEA coordinates the election in the Fall and only ACEA members may participate in the voting. There are no term limits.

 

Placement Review.

This committee addresses situations involving grossly disruptive students and details can be found in the contract (Article XVI, sec 2). There
